'English Vinglish' Review: The film leaves you with a big smile on your face

Cast: Sridevi, Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou
Director: Gauri Shinde
Returning to the screen after a hiatus of 15 years in first-time director Gauri Shinde's charming comedy 'English Vinglish', Sridevi hits all the right notes.
'English Vinglish' Review: The film leaves you with a big smile on your face
Five minutes into the film, and she's already found her way into your heart as Shashi, the uncomplaining Maharashtrian housewife who quietly puts up with the playful but insensitive jibes her husband and kids take at her, for her inability to speak proper English. It's such a terrific performance in fact, that it makes you overlook the rather trite notion that a caring wife and mother, who runs a small but successful catering business from home, must speak fluent English in order to regain her sense of self-worth.

‘Barfi’ box office collection crosses Rs 1 billion mark

Mumbai: Finally and predictably, ‘Barfi’ box office collection has crossed Rs.100 crore mark and the film, as reports suggest is still going strong. To be true, the success of the film has amazed many film watchers as the huge collection has come mainly from metros and multiplexes as in rural India the film didn’t get the sort of response it was expecting.
Though the film was doing good business at the box office from the very first day of its launch, it picked up substantially after it was announced to be the official Indian entry for Oscars.
Notwithstanding the accusations of plagiarism, the film has continued to do rather good business all along. Even Karina Kapoor’s film Heroine’s launch didn’t affect its market at all. It is notwithstanding the fact that both films are urban and competed in multiplexes across the country.

Dates for the 2012 Nobel Prize announcements

Stockholm:  The winners of the 2012 Nobel Prizes are to be announced next week, with no clear frontrunners yet seen for the much-talked about Peace and Literature prizes and suspense and speculation mount.

Betting sites have become a popular feature of the Nobel guessing game in recent years, with gamers sometimes surprisingly accurate, even suspiciously so.

Chinese author Mo Yan and Japan's Haruki Murakami share the top spots on two Swedish betting sites a week ahead of the expected announcement of the Nobel Literature Prize, while Coptic Christian Maggie Gobran of Egypt who helps the poor in Cairo's slums tops the one Swedish site taking bets for the Peace Prize.

Google invites Indian children for Doodle 4 Google competition

MUMBAI: Google is inviting Indian children to doodle their ideas on diversity.

The company on Wednesday announced the 2012 Doodle 4 Google competition where children between the ages of 5 and 16, will be invited to create a doodle (using the Google logo) around the theme of 'Unity in Diversity'.

The winning doodle will be featured on Google India's homepage on November 14, Children's Day.

Over the years, the Google doodle has become a popular and innovative way for the company to commemorate important events, like the independence days of various countries (Including India's, which was depicted with a peacock doodle), special days and events like the Olympics, and celebrate the birthdays of well-known people, among other things.
