'English Vinglish' Review: The film leaves you with a big smile on your face
Cast: Sridevi, Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou
Director: Gauri Shinde
Returning to the screen after a hiatus of 15 years in first-time director Gauri Shinde's charming comedy 'English Vinglish', Sridevi hits all the right notes.
Five minutes into the film, and she's already found her way into your heart as Shashi, the uncomplaining Maharashtrian housewife who quietly puts up with the playful but insensitive jibes her husband and kids take at her, for her inability to speak proper English. It's such a terrific performance in fact, that it makes you overlook the rather trite notion that a caring wife and mother, who runs a small but successful catering business from home, must speak fluent English in order to regain her sense of self-worth.

‘Barfi’ box office collection crosses Rs 1 billion mark
Mumbai: Finally and predictably, ‘Barfi’ box office collection has crossed Rs.100 crore mark and the film, as reports suggest is still going strong. To be true, the success of the film has amazed many film watchers as the huge collection has come mainly from metros and multiplexes as in rural India the film didn’t get the sort of response it was expecting.
Though the film was doing good business at the box office from the very first day of its launch, it picked up substantially after it was announced to be the official Indian entry for Oscars.
Notwithstanding the accusations of plagiarism, the film has continued to do rather good business all along. Even Karina Kapoor’s film Heroine’s launch didn’t affect its market at all. It is notwithstanding the fact that both films are urban and competed in multiplexes across the country.

Over the years, the Google doodle has become a popular and innovative way for the company to commemorate important events, like the independence days of various countries (Including India's, which was depicted with a peacock doodle), special days and events like the Olympics, and celebrate the birthdays of well-known people, among other things.
Audi to exceed target of selling 8,000 cars in 2012
NEW DELHI: Luxury car maker Audi India on Wednesday said it will exceed its target of selling 8,000 units this year, buoyed by 82 per cent jump in sales in September.
The company is also considering to raise the prices of its entire range of vehicles post festive season in November or December to mitigate the impact of adverse foreign exchange movements and strengthening of raw material rates.
"With the strong numbers in September, we have already crossed last year's total sales numbers. It is a big achievement for us. We are now fully confident of crossing our target of selling 8,000 cars in 2012 by a good number," Audi India Head Michael Perschke told PTI.
The company's sales in September soared by 82.16 per cent to 1,011 compared to 555 units in September 2011, he added.
Sehwag in doubt for CLT20 - Opener sustains ankle injury after poor World Cup.
COLOMBO: A ligament injury has thrown Virender Sehwag's participation in the Champions League Twenty20 in doubt.
The out-of-form opener, who represents Delhi Daredevils, has been advised two weeks of rest because of a left ankle ligament injury sustained against South Africa in India's last Super Eights match on Tuesday.
Sehwag sustained the injury celebrating Jacques Kallis' dismissal in the fourth over of the chase and was substituted by Manoj Tiwary. The India opener had a poor ICC World Twenty20, totalling 54 across three innings.
The CLT20 begins in South Africa from October 9 and Daredevils begin their campaign on October 13, against Kolkata Knight Riders at Centurion.

BSNL must improve quality of service, says Kapil Sibal
NEW DELHI: Telecom minister Kapil Sibal Monday cautioned state owned mobile phone company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and said the telco must improve its quality of service and focus on revenue generation to survive the highly competitive market.
Speaking in the 12 thanniversary of BSNL's mobile operations, Sibal said: "Every employee must feel that the targeted revenue achieved is the dominant benchmark of performance, which must reflect in their annual appraisals. BSNL must change its set up from bureaucratic to business verticals and also look at enterprise business that will generate profits in the long term."
The minister added that he was reviewing the performance at the national level, which will become more frequent and exhaustive. Improved quality of service and quicker resolution of customer complaints will also improve market share as consumers will pick BSNL over other service providers, he said.
In contrast to conceding market share to competition, BSNL should not lose its lead in the broadband space which will be the next arena of growth for the country, Sibal added.

Sridevi: 15 years? I feel like I've been away only for a week
New Delhi: Her waif-like appearance, the exquisitely tailored clothes and the aquiline nose might belie her age - she will be 50 next year - but from the moment actress Sridevi starts to speak you recognise the familiar quiver in the voice and are transported to the glorious late 80s and early 90s when she reigned on Hindi cinema.
Sri is back after a hiatus of almost 15 years with her new film 'English Vinglish' but she said during an interaction with the press in New Delhi that she did not feel the years go by since her 1997 film 'Judaai'.
"The thing is, I do not even feel that 14-15 years have passed. I feel like I am back after a week's break from work," Sri said.
Cross promotion: Bollywood's new publicity gimmick
Two upcoming films have come up with the brainwave of cross promotion, taking Bollywood publicity gimmicks to a new level.
Ajay Devgn's much-hyped Diwali release, Son Of Sardaar, and the 3D sci-fi film Makkhi will be piggybacking on the box-office draw of each other for the right amount of marketing.
On one hand, Makkhi has accommodated a spoof sequence of a trademark scene featuring Ajay standing tall on two galloping horses in Son Of Sardaar.
The scene from the film Makkhi is the copy of the ( image below) still from Son of Sardar
In the sci-fi flick, the hero - a housefly out to avenge human - is seen striking a similar pose on two smaller flies.
England v Sri Lanka T20: as it happened
The hosts qualify for the semi-finals along with West Indies, England are going home. We assumed that England would find the spinners tricky, but in the end it was a blistering over by Malinga, ripping out the top three, that sunk England. Malinga finished with five wickets, the only bright spot for England being an attractive, aggressive 67 from Samit Patel that has done his selection claims for the India Tests no harm. In truth, it never looked like being more than a consolation prize, and in my opinion England were never likely to chase 170 runs.
There will be some who wonder if England tinkered with their team too much, making three changes for today.
NZ vs WI: West Indies keep hopes alive, knock out New Zealand in Super Over
PALLEKELE ( Sri Lanka): West Indies knocked New Zealand out of the World Twenty20 in a dramatic Super Over on Monday after their group one match finished in a tie.
Both teams were locked at 139 after 40 overs at Pallekele stadium, sending the match to the tense Super Over decider. New Zealand scored a challenging 17 off their six balls with Ross Taylor hitting a six off Marlon Samuels.
But West Indies reached the target with a ball to spare as Samuels smashed the winning six off Tim Southee to keep his team in contention for a semifinal place.
West Indies, who have two wins in three matches, now wait for the result of Sri Lanka's game against England later Monday, which will decide which two teams from the group progress to the semifinals.
The breathless finish came after Southee (3-21) and Doug Bracewell (3-31) restricted the West Indian innings to 139 in 19.3 overs, before Taylor's unbeaten 62 kept New Zealand in with a chance for an upset win.
Facebook, YouTube blocked in Kashmir
New Delhi: Internet users in Kashmir are unable to access Facebook and YouTube. The government had issued orders to Internet service providers to restrict access to the websites. This move is believed to be in response to the protests against the anti-Islam video on YouTube.
It was previously reported that the certain URLs with offensive content had been blocked, but it now seems that access to the entire websites have been restricted. Last month the Government of Jammu & Kashmir had directed service providers to ensure that the controversial YouTube video was not accessible from the state.
The order was issued by the state Home Department, invoking the powers conferred under section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act 1885.

Ranbir beats cousin Kareena in box office race
Ranbir Kapoor's deaf and mute character in Barfi! seems to be giving cousin Kareena Kapoor's glamorous avatar in Heroine a run for her money!
The sweet and simple love story of a mute and deaf boy in Barfi! seems to have touched the heartstrings of viewers who are still flocking theatres to savour the unconventional romantic flavour. On the other hand, Heroine, with an an overdose of glitz, doesn't seem to have the same effect on the moviegoers.
It is obvious from the fact that the Rs. 30 crore- Barfi!, released on Sept 14, has raked in Rs. 82.05 crore net at the domestic box-office, while Heroine, which released a week later, has garnered just Rs. 32 crore. Made at a budget of Rs. 20 crore, it has recovered the cost, but is not as big a success as Barfi!.
Both the films have been produced and distributed by Disney UTV.
